Description
Ozone is one of the strongest oxidizers. In practical usage, ozone has shown great effect for disinfection, sterilization, deodorization and decomposing pesticide residual. It’s an efficient broad-spectrum and environmentally friendly fungicide.
There are mainly four application fields of ozone: water treatment, chemical oxidation, food processing and medical treatment.
Water treatment--Ozone has high killing rate and fast speed against microorganisms in water such as bacteria and viruses, and completely removes pollutants such as organic compounds without secondary pollution. When polluted water sources is disinfected by chlorine, it possibly can produce carcinogenic chlorinated organic compounds (THMs), such as chloroform, bromodichloromethane, and carbon tetrachloride, while the oxidation process in ozone treatment does not produce secondary pollutants. Wastewater treatment includes the treatment of urban wastewater, industrial wastewater, and medical wastewater, with the main purpose of sterilization, removal of pollutants, decolorization and deodorization to meet discharge standards. After using ozone to disinfect swimming pool water, the water is clear and transparent, completely solving the problems of chlorine disinfection that irritates the eyes, skin, respiratory tract, and causes hair to turn yellow. The effects and advantages of ozone in water treatment have been recognized world widely.
The American Cooling Tower Association recommends ozone treatment for cooling circulating water, which can achieve the goals of scale inhibition, descaling, sterilization, algae removal, corrosion prevention, and stable water quality.
Chemical oxidation--As oxidant, catalyst and refining agent, ozone is also widely used in chemical industry, oil, paper making, textile, pharmacy and spice. Due to its strong oxidation ability, ozone can easily break the carbon chain binding bonds of olefins and alkynes, causing them to partially oxidize and combine into new compounds. In terms of gas purification under biological and chemical pollution, the odor from fur, sausage casings, and fish processing plants, as well as the pollution gas from rubber and chemical plants, can also be decomposed and deodorized through ozone. Ozone has a catalytic effect on the synthesis of pesticides, can also oxidize and decompose certain pesticide residues.
Food processing-- Due to advantages of strong bactericidal ability and no residual pollution, ozone has been widely used in the food industry for disinfection, deodorization, mold prevention and food preservation. In April 1997, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) amended the regulations about restriction of the use of ozone as a "food additive", allowing the use of ozone in food processing and storage without an application. This has greatly improved technologies of food processing and food quality.
Medical treatment--The main application of ozone is air disinfection in wardrooms and operation rooms, while more and more researches have been carried out in the field of medical treatment. In German, Swiss, Russia and Italy, Physician internists and dentists have been using ozone during medical treatment, for example, use ozonated water to maintain sterile for oral surgery or prosthodontics, us ozone and radiotherapy for curing cancer, drink ozonated water for curing gynaecological diseases, inject ozone gas for curing hemorrhoid and fistula, varicosity, etcs.
Safe to use ozone properly
As gas bactericide, depending on its high oxidation ability, ozone has very strong sterilizing effect against microorganism, such as virus, bacteria, fungus and mould. Like other sanitizer may causes physiological reaction or even harm to animals or humans, ozone may also do so, but it’s minor and can easily prevented and protected. No death has been caused by ozone poisoning so far. When getting a whiff of special ozone smell, stimulation is the reaction of respiratory mucosa, felling thirsty, coughing, or even sore throat and fatigue, which can disappear in a few hours. Comparing with common detergents like formalin, peracetic acid, potassium permanganate, ozone has unmatched advantages of strong bactericidal ability, self-decomposition without residual pollution, quick disappearing of discomfort after leaving the scene. Scientific and proper use of ozone can prevent health from possible harm.
